Spend any time in Indian Country and you’re sure to have seen a “kokum” or “grandma” scarf. Typically made out of cotton and decorated with brightly-colored flowers, these scarves are Russian in origin, through the long history of trade and commerce between Russian missionaries and Indigenous communities.
In this modern twist, Inspired Natives® Collaborator Jared Yazzie (Diné/Navajo) has decolonized the design. Though the artist has kept the traditional floral element, he has replaced the primary color palette with subtle desert hues and incorporated Indigenous plants and iconography from Navajo Country.
A note on the fabric: these 100% silk scarves are plain weave and the design is printed on one side. (Silk is the fiber; plain weave is the weave structure.) These scarves have a smooth texture and are the typical "slipperiness" many people associate with silk. Our silk scarves have the lightness and coolness you expect from silk, with a fluid drape.
